Happy summer, everyone! We are all gearing up over here for our next release, a set of Fall-oriented bundles, so Fall capsule wardrobes are on the mind.
Choosing patterns for your toddler capsule wardrobe can be one of the most challenging parts of the process - but also one of the most fun! The patterns and fabric are equally important in defining the feel and style of the capsule, so making sure you're selecting the right ones is a key step.
For toddlers, we like to look for patterns that make it easy for toddlers to do what they do best: MOVE. Comfortable, stretchy fabrics and simple, classic shapes help our active kids get around and take the fuss out of getting dressed (everything goes together!!).
1. Joggers: True Bias Mini Hudson Pants
Joggers are trendy right now and for good reason - who doesn't want a classy pair of sweatpants with slant pockets for storing treasures? So many great pattern companies offer a jogger silhouette and one of our favorites is True Bias - the Hudson Pants are available for kids as small as 2T, men, and women, so you can sew up a matching set for the family!
These pants are so cute and so comfortable. A straightforward sew that still looks refined and will teach you some more advanced techniques in an accessible way!
Bonus: These are extra cute in a woven with knit cuffs! Size up at least 1 size and cut the legs and main pocket out of your woven fabric, then cut the cuffs, waistband, and pocket trim from rib knit. Use a cute quilting cotton or other printed woven for the pocket facing for a little surprise!
2. Top: Little Lizard King Andover Tee
The next piece you'll need is a top. You can't beat a simple tee in a capsule wardrobe since they're so easy to layer and go with everything. The Andover Tee from Little Lizard King comes with a ton of variations, making it an excellent value along with being so cute and versatile. Choose a pocket or a placket, short or long sleeves, sleeveless - this is the only pattern you need for sewing tops!
Pictured here with Castella boxer briefs (undies are another great addition to a capsule - you can often make them with the scraps from other items!).
3. Light Layer: Brindille & Twig Retro Cardigan OR Zip Jacket
Two-for-one in this recommendation! We couldn't decide whether to recommend the Retro Cardigan or Zip Jacket from Brindille & Twig - they're both such versatile shapes but with very different vibes. We thought we'd leave that one up to you and the personality of your specific capsule (and little person!). One benefit of the Zip Jacket is you can sew it with or without a hood - adding to the versatility there. The Retro Cardigan can be sewn as a long sleeve sweater or vest, so there are some options & added cuteness there as well.
Both patterns come in sizes preemie-6T so the whole family can match!
Choosing Fabrics
Once you have your patterns selected, you'll need the right amount of fabric to make your vision become reality. For kids between 3-6T, you can usually get 1-2 garments from a single yard of fabric (even if the pattern calls for a full yard). You can get 3-4 (or more!) garments from a yard for kiddos under 3, depending on what you're making. A good place to start is 2 yards of one or two prints, 2 yards of two different coordinating solids, and about a half yard of one or two coordinating rib knits to make the patterns above in enough combinations to mix and match.
Or keep it simple and pick up one of our capsule bundles - designed to be just the right colors, textures, and quantities to sew a versatile wardrobe.
